Day 13 June

Day 13 June

The morning was cold. I force myself to wake up at 0600 local time. For what? To run! I have been swimming but I have not run for the last few months. But it was a good run with 3 of my students. We ran for about 20 minutes around Endcliffe Park.

This morning will be the student first walk to the campus. It will be so for the next 2 weeks walk about 3 km a day to and fro to the Diamond. The temperature was cool, but praise God, it did not rain. The students took pictures along the way.

The program start with a walk around the Diamond visiting the various lab. The facilities enable the students to work on their own on the various project. I count myself fortunate to be in Singapore, knowing that we too have good facilities in our schools and polytechnic. The government has indeed invested a lot on education.

We had a campus treasure hunt. Of course the most interesting is still the "lift" at Art Tower.

After lunch the program has 2 workshop. One is how to made informed decision. The activities was based on a real scenario with facts and data present and the students role played to make the final decision to race or not to race. I in particular like this activity as it involve real life data and how to use the facts and data to made a real life informed decision. Decisions that is based on facts and not emotions. Decision is made based on priorities and values. What is the most important to made decisions.

The second workshop is on the 6 thinking hats. Of course it is easy to know. But in life making decisions, when did we use it. It is a thought process that uses that weighs based on good, the bad, the wacky and facts.

Day 12 June

Day 12 June 2016

It has been a year since I last flew to Sheffield. The "orange" chocolate that I brought for Jo is still in the fridge. Jo has kept it as a memento!

This year another new 20 students. But the relationship that was bonded among the last batch is still strong. When Gary Woods was here in Singapore on the last week of June, many of the students arranged to meet him up. Rach went to the zoo with him, and I met him for breakfast. Some of the last batch of students has help me in some of the industrial projects, further kept the bond alive!

This year I am the trip leader. I set the tone for that bond. I hope to see the same and stronger bonding than last year. I remember the effort and the time spent in conversations during the trip to know and understand the students. I will do likewise.

It was a long flight, longer than last year. We flew from Singapore to Istanbul via Turkish Airlines. This is my first transit in Istanbul International Airport. We waited about 2 hours before taking flight to Manchester. I knew I was tired. While waiting, I tried reading a book and do my time alone with God, but doze off in the chair. I managed to find a empty lounge, lie flat and sleep for an hour.

The flight to Istanbul was further delay because of some radar failure at the control tower. Praise God that they stop the take off and did not continue to do so. It was another 4 hours flight to Manchester. I am surprise to find the movie War Room (which I will reflect on this movie in another blog).

Gary was there to pick up at Manchester. Once loaded up the coach, it is another 1 hour drive to Sheffield. I knew now I can close my eyes for a good nap.

We had a good lunch at the Ridge.

We went for a short walk for those with boundless energy. I took them to my morning jogging route. The turn around was at a park. There was a funfair there. We saw interesting and were surprise to see something very interesting ride. We just had our lunch, but we will find time to ride that monster! That arm swings 180 degree. Something I did not see in Singapore. Some of the rides are comparable to Disneyland. Singapore rides seem to stay in the 80s with no new player.

Gary gave us a briefing before heading for dinner. Most of us were still quite full from the lunch and kept dinner for super.
