19 June 2016

Sunday we went horse riding. To most of us this was the first time. For me even though I have ride a few times, the horse is still reign and I do not get to ride it myself. I understand that for safety. Blame it that Singapore is too small for such cross country activities.

While waiting I spend the time walking around the farm, spending time with my God for the many blessings that He has showered on the nation Singapore, my family and this trip.

The coach took us next to MU. This was not a planned trip but a request by the students. We paid some 25 pound for the trip. I am not a football fan. Even so it was many years ago when I was a teens. The last time I step into a stadium is for the Global Day of Prayers. The last time I watch a match in a stadium was when I was a teen during SYF. Well since I am in England...

18 June 2016

18 June 2016

It was a day out. A chance to breathe in the air from the country side. We we at Castleton, in the Peak District, off Sheffield.

I did not venture into the town for sight seeing or shopping, but went to the slopes and have lunch with the sheep, over seeing the plains that is surrounded by hills that is below.

An experience you do not get in Singapore.

We are tasks goers, get-ters. We have set our purposes, so we are going after them. I take a step back. What are these purposes for, for whom or for self. The writer of Psalm 90, wrote about the transient in life. Is it about this short life that we attempt to make a name for our self or for our next generations. Psalm 90 mentioned about the establish the works of our hands. What works then should be established or can be established accorded to this transient life?

Not until I realized that it is far more longer that the works mentioned in Psalm 90 is to be established - established eternally. For whom this eternity comes from, except God.

The daybefore (Thursday) we were in the Diamond. The students did there project works, combing through relevant data so that they could start they ideas generation and design or suggest a solutions to their solutions.

Friday was a field trip to the industry.

Day 15 June

Day 15 June

We went to Gripple. A GLIDE company where the students learnt how to generate ideas using tools like 6 colored hats, brainstorm etc and start to generate prototype and present a idea.

It all start with observations and considers the things that irks. Then determine what and which area to begin with to tackle the problem. The idea generation using various create tools including lateral thinking to generate solutions for the problem. Some considerations is can the solution add value (like save time and effort), can the solution be greener, be digitized.

Once the solution is decided it is then for us to develop a prototype to prove that the solution can work. But prototype do not stop here. We need to sell the idea. It is from idea to generate invoice.

The presentation of idea can be in the form of storyboard, which explain the problem, for whom the solution is for, how is the solution solve the problem and what are the benefits.

GLIDE - Growth Led Innovation Driven Employee
I like this acronym. It motivates me in the company to create. It includes the need for growth which what a company is setup for. Innovation that propel the company to keep ahead and it is also about the employees.

Day 14 June

Day 14 June

It drizzles in the morning. But the running group continued to gather and run. It was an experience for the students to run in the cold morning.

Today is the day the project grouping is done. The day start off with a workshop on working style and working on constraint.

It allow myself to consider how I work, the prefer style. Though this is not new to me, but it reminds me of my own personality. The preferred style that I used to work needs to moderate and adjust at times.

Compare to the last batch, using spaghetti, a team managed to build a tower that is 95 cm tall! Unfortunately that team did not win because they did not build it according to specifications! The facts of life reminds me of the reality of life. We will be disappointed because we try to win the applause of man, but instead seek the approval of God.

Again the students were grouped into 4. This time the allocations were not some of the students first choice, but they are ok. Indeed, the attitude makes them continue and instead gave up because that is not what they like. It is this flexibility that make us succeed. We do not always get what we want but what we do not gave up because of that.

After dinner we went to shop at Meadow Hall. I bought a present for Mat and Deb and some chocolates for the colleagues. I did not know what to buy for Jo. I saw what my students, the boys what they bought for themselves, and will probably buy a Holster T Shirt for Jo.
